Here’s a fun outing here in Washington DC with a holiday theme and it’s completely FREE! The U.S. Botanical Garden is always lovely, but it’s particularly captivating until January 5 with its current holiday exhibits. Gorgeous trees, a train display that’s a feast for the eyes, plus some of Washington’s famous buildings, monuments, and memorials made completely out of plant materials. Check it out! Click on the link above for the garden’s hours. PS it’s also mostly indoors.
Before/After :: A Secret Book Nook for Mom!
This homeowner dreamed up a use for the area under her stairs — and we love the clever use of color, textiles, and function. The cozy nook is wrapped in a restful blue, and she designed the space to include plenty of light for reading and relaxing …. plus, just enough storage for a few personal items, and her current stash of books! We ordered a customized bench cushion for her to take advantage of the precious space. Such a fun project!
Here are a few “before” pictures of the space before its transformation.
Before/After :: A Refurbished Dual Laundry/Storage Room
This renovated utility space functions as a laundry room and overflow pantry/storage area as well. It used to be a large unfinished space that made laundry seem like a dreary task. Now, it’s got lots of new wall-mounted cabinetry, in addition to custom built-in shelves for larger items. The “utility” part of the room is tucked into a closet, and the new flooring is laid lengthwise to make the space seem larger. The homeowner even made a statement with colorful knobs on the cabinets!
Here we have a few “before” pictures — hard to believe its the same space!
My Favorite New Soup
This is a delish and beautiful soup inspired by a recipe from the Sunday Parade magazine insert a few years ago. I usually substitute chicken stock for the vegetable stock and add more than it calls for in the recipe. Since it uses so many ingredients, I always double the recipe so I can have lots of yummy leftovers. Enjoy!
What I’m Reading :: The Most Fun We Ever Had
I just started this book and I’m already hooked. A debut novel by Claire Lombardo about a family and all the mess, heartbreak and hilarity that comes with a family. It’s a great winter book to spend long chilly evenings with!
Local Treasure :: Tint Makerspace of Falls Church
We are thrilled to discover this new sparkling craft shop in Falls Church, featuring all the stuff you’ll need to create a new handmade product. Yarn, fabric, notions …. plus areas to linger for awhile and chat with the shop’s lovely owner. With plenty of parking in this hidden gem in Falls Church, (it’s right on Broad Street, and faces the back of the building), this space is sure to be a magnet when the new class and workshop schedule kicks into high gear. Here’s the website. Be sure to check it out!
Before/After :: A Stunning Exterior Transformation
We enjoyed helping our clients update the look of their gingerbread house exterior —- it was time for a change and we zeroed in on a clean + fresh palette of crisp white, 2 shades of blue, and a brilliant purple. The results speak for themselves. Wowza! ???? ???? ????
Here’s a few “before” pics of the exterior.
Before/After :: Carving Out a Spacious + Sunny Laundry
This project was a fun one, purely driven by the homeowners’ desire for a large laundry room on the ground level. We took a long and narrow family room, and stole a bit of space from one end, using a well-placed pocket door for access. They’ve got space for hanging clothes, ironing, storing overstock items, even a utility sink. The light streams in and the space is gleaming.
Here’s an image of the space before we annexed it for the laundry. The sofa stayed just where it always was — and the space behind it transformed into a very functional, additional room.
