Inspiration from a Boutique Hotel
Before/After :: A Custom Mudroom for a Busy Family
This space was just begging for a mudroom to organize incoming shoes and backpacks since it connects directly to the garage. The family has a coat closet on the other side so we decided on a custom bench with ship lap to create a look that the homeowner really wanted. Our awesome contractor did a fantastic job, and our client likes the open feel underneath the bench along with the flexibility to change out baskets or other storage containers as the family’s needs change over time. Ps we love that ship lap!
Before/After :: Updating a Shower
We love this transformation! Our awesome contractor took an existing space that couldn’t really be enlarged, but was able to add height to the shower opening, which really helped + he added an interior light as well. The tile and fixtures were all removed, and we added a new clear shower door + a neutral/crisp mix of tile for the walls and shower floor. For the floor, we chose smooth stones that conjure a spa feeling. For the walls, we chose a beautiful slightly wavy glass tile and matched the same tone with the penny tiles in the niche. Success!
Below, we took two pictures of the old shower door and its yellow interior tile. Removing that gold upper frame made such a difference!
Before/After :: Adding Color with a Custom Rug
We’ve got a sweet family with a Pittsburgh Steelers-themed room for their boys. It’s got lots of great wall art, and bedding in the Steelers team colors, but their mom was looking for a cool way to tie everything together, and we wanted to protect the floors. So we chose to do a custom-sized Flor rug, which came together easily, and will be durable for this trio of boys! We actually thinks it makes the room seem larger. Scroll down for the “before” photo.
Introducing Strategies for Decluttering
This is one of our favorite topics, the reason many people hire us, and the new “buzz word” over the last few years when it comes to creating a home where you really enjoy spending time. After all, that should be everyone’s goal. We believe your home should be your refuge, and it’s hard to have that with lots of visual clutter in your bedroom, on your kitchen counter tops, in the bathroom, etc.
,
During a recent trip, I was listening to the Young House Love podcast where they had a lively conversation with author Joshua Becker about his new book The Minimalist Home. Catchy title! Feel free to follow the link above to listen to the full interview, but I outlined a few points that really resonated with us and that we think will give you a few strategies for tackling clutter in your own space.
- Make a list of categories (for example :: clothes, books, paper, toys, accessories, kitchen, bathroom, linen closet contents). Then start with the category that seem easiest for you, that doesn’t have lots of emotional ties. In other words, don’t dive right into photos or other sentimental items. This may seem like obvious advice, but studies show that once to have success in one category, you are likely to continue on for further feelings of accomplishment!
- Be kind to yourself. Brew a cup of tea and put on some music. Invite a friend for moral support if you feel like that will help. Don’t invite a friend if you think it will distract you!
- Sort items into 3 categories :: keep, donate, trash. Generally, you cannot make enough money by selling your items to make it worth your time and effort. You’ll be surprised by how good it feels to donate your things to a worthy cause. Put donated items in your car or schedule a pickup. That’s an easy thing to do.
- For toys and other items for your kids, Becker has some good advice about giving them a certain physical space with known parameters in which to store their stuff. For example, their toys must fit into a closet, or along a wall. When they run out of room, help them to make choices and encourage the idea of donating to children who may not have as much. Everyone in the family can feel good by donating underused items.
- Treat your living and sleeping space with respect. Why have a room or closet or drawer that’s filled with items you don’t need, want, or like?
- Specify the purpose of each space. And then think about that purpose. What’s distracting from the purpose? What’s not contributing? For instance, if it’s your bedroom, perhaps there’s a desk that’s overflowing with papers that makes you anxious every time you walk in. If it’s your kitchen, you are there to prepare food. It can be hard to do that if the counters are filled with mail. So remove the mail and find another landing spot for that.
- Results help you gain more results! The feeling of accomplishment will propel you to do more.
Tips from the Madcap Cottage design duo
The Madcap Cottage collection is known for its brave and fearless use of color, pattern, and texture. Their mantra? “Bring the adventure home.” We love it! They use their travels and experiences as inspiration for their stunning collection of fabric, wallpaper, furniture, lighting, and accessories.
We enjoyed time with them recently at the grand opening of the Calico in Old Town Alexandria. Here are some trends they are seeing for 2019.
Chinoiserie is seeing a resurgence. Florals are big, as well as fabrics featuring foliage and botanicals, and if they are done against a black backdrop, they will really pop. Watercolors can work in a contemporary space. Embroidery and linens with differing types of stitching help to bring a special quality to any room. When selecting/placing items in a room, give visual cues to establish a focal point and pecking order. What’s the star? What are the supporting players? Choose a mix of 3 different scales/sizes for fabrics in a room. Finishes don’t have to match. Add embroidered tape trim to the lower edge of a skirt for a chair or sofa to customize it.
“Think about prints and pattern as a mini vacation.” What great advice!
How to make Lavender Spray
Making your own lavender spray is so easy. With a couple of boys in the house I find that I use it a lot – especially when they are playing sports. All you need is a small spray bottle – dark glass is best, but to be honest mine is clear and plastic and works fine, alcohol (either vodka or rubbing), water and lavender essential oil. There are so many brands nowadays. Just use your favorite. Add 3/4 cup water and 2 Tbs alcohol to bottle. Then add about 15-20 drops of oil. Spritz away!
This is a great gift idea, and be sure to make some for yourself. I also use this every night on my pillows before I get into bed!
What I’m Reading Now
If you’re looking for your next favorite book – you’ve found it! Less by Andrew Sean Greer is a wonderful story. The protagonist Arthur Less is a sweet but slightly lost soul. Luckily for us, he’s also a writer. When his longtime boyfriend decides to marry someone else and invites him to the wedding, he hatches an escape plan that sends him around the world on various literary assignments. The journey is so much fun! I liked it so much I am now reading another of his – The Confessions of Max Tivoli : a Novel.
Bonus: it’s won several awards!
