We are pleased to highlight this family room, where a family heirloom rug became the “jumping-off point” for its design direction! The homeowners had recently acquired this rug from a family member and were looking to buy new furniture and paint the walls. In addition, we wanted to help highlight the beautiful natural light streaming through the front windows, while addressing shoe storage, as the room is directly adjacent to the entry foyer. We chose a soft grey/blue/turquoise for the walls, kept the existing tables and television cabinet, and added a neutral sofa with a pair of whimsical ottomans so everyone has a place to get comfy.
Here’s some “before” pictures.
The bookcases that were flanking the front window were removed, and a built-in window seat with lots of baskets underneath makes a tidy spot for storing shoes. We added a tailored reversible cushion and a structured cornice at the top in lieu of curtain panels.
A new ceiling-mount fixture and a pair of small floor/task lamps make it comfortable for both reading and watching television in the evenings.
We are thrilled to highlight the work of this local creative talent. We first spied one of her creations in a local shop here in Falls Church. We love the whimsical nature and the way she is fearless with color!
I was so impressed that I asked her to do a mural for my son’s room, inspired by our time on vacation at a lake in the Adirondacks in New York state. Here’s the inspiration picture:
And this is the gorgeous result!
We are so pleased — it’s become one of the favorite rooms in our house. Thank you Ashley!

Our client asked for a new/clean look for a bedroom that has lots of gorgeous natural light. Crown molding was added at the ceiling and we used a pretty grey on the walls. The ceiling fan was removed and we added a double layer drum shade in its place. Combined with some new furniture that the client purchased and a new set of cellular shades, this room is a knockout!
We love how this one turned out! Just a simple paint job and some new linens, and a lovely guest refuge awaits! Scroll down for the “before” pics.

We took a field trip to Baltimore last month and spent a happy hour (or two!) hunting around this huge warehouse of found items. All are donated, and most things come out of building and structures slated for demolition. It’s a treasure trove. We ended up with an old church pew and a few other odds and ends, and it was really fun to pick through all the different sections. The space is well organized and well staffed — we love their mission statement where they commit to hiring people that are otherwise “unemployable” and giving them job training. Go and check it out sometime! Their website also gives lots of information, including hours and location — it’s right off I-95 near the exit for the Inner Harbor.
A client recently asked us to help her update a few bathrooms in her home, with budget in mind. They hadn’t been touched in more than 10 years, and some elements were dated, but luckily she has neutral floor tile and white cabinetry. We simply switched out the knobs and mirrors, and then had all the walls painted in a white that worked with the existing white counter tops. It made all the difference. We hadn’t added any accessories or art yet when these pictures were taken, but the “white dip” really cleans up each space and adds a fresh and updated touch. A few colorful pieces of art on the wall, and some fun throw rugs, and it will all spring to life. White makes the perfect foundation for a bathroom.
Here’s a few pictures of one of the bathrooms before the walls were painted and new light fixtures and mirrors installed.

This is one of our favorite family room updates! The room has good bones, with a fireplace to the ceiling and tons of floor-to-ceiling windows. Our job was to update the color palette, keeping the new lively orange curtains and getting rid of the bulky furniture. We opted for a new layout — long slipcovered sofa and two comfy swivel leather recliners. We used small side tables, floor lamps, and a pair of x-ottomans to keep the space airy and light. The ottomans can be split apart or together. The homeowner even got in on the act, chalk-painting an existing sofa table to be placed behind the new sofa!
Below, you’ll see a few pictures of the room before we made all the changes!
This is the latest from Meg Wolitzer, also the author of The Interestings and The Ten-Year Nap. It is particularly timely in today’s day and age, as it traces the main character throughout her adolescence, into college, and on through her career. I recommend it!
A feast for the eyes! We love ordering beautiful creations from this bakery — she does incredible work. The cupcakes pictured are from my daughter’s birthday party this year, and this pastry pro really wowed us with her beautiful assortment of delectable cakes. Check out her website for information on pricing and additional pictures. She even delivers!
Jen and Anne were so much fun to work with. My living room and office/exercise area really needed a refresh. Trying to figure out what to do was completely overwhelming for me until Jen and Anne were recommended. They really listened to what I was aiming to accomplish and provided thoughtful suggestions and new ideas that I NEVER would have thought of. As I result, I now have improved lighting, carpets, furniture, accent pieces and, best of all, a fantastic gallery wall that I can add to and/or rearrange. I’m so comfortable and happy in my improved spaces. Jen and Anne are the best!
Jen and Anne have great ideas and are fun to work with. They made suggestions for design, lighting, furnishings and storage that have made my living space more comfortable and functional. I would never have been able to accomplish any of this without them. And all this happened during COVID! They're the best!
Their design knowledge combined with their access to many competent professionals made the job so easy! Ann and Jen were super easy to work with and always wore masks. I have lived here since 1987 & I have never been this thrilled with my home. They were conscious of the budget. I highly recommend Ann & Jen of 1970 Dogwood Street!
Jen and Anne were amazing! They listened well to get a good understanding of my needs and style and then came up with great ideas and designs. Their use of Pinterest boards made is super easy to exchange ideas. Jen would also text me photos if she happened to be at a store and saw something I may like/need. They are very thoughtful and professional and deliver as expected. I highly recommend.
They provided fresh and innovative ideas where I had no clue, helped guide me where I already had views, and were great sounding boards where I was unsure (and they often would bounce ideas off of one other, resulting in a great final product). They were never pushy or judgmental but were always honest and supportive with their views. They were always enthusiastic and clearly love what they do. They were ready to do anything from offer little tips to go pick out and buy everything for me (and everything in between).
Thanks for helping us transition our living room and kitchen into a warm and cozy space. We love it!
I wasn’t sure what I wanted our basement to look like, beyond removing the carpet and changing the paint color. You two took my hazy vision and vague ideas and made every inch of the limited space truly work! The framed gallery of family photos brings me great joy and makes the room vibrant!
Most especially, I loved working with you both. You really took the time to ask the right questions to learn exactly how my family operates, our personalities, interests and styles and then, amazingly, put it all together.
"Ladies, you rocked my world. So much done and out of my hands that I don't need to worry about anymore!"
“Jen and Anne are two super talented people that can really take care of anything you need them to do! They transformed my living room while coming in under budget and getting my "style" better than I did! Besides their unlimited design and organizational skills, I can really attest to their efficient, no-nonsense way they get any job done.
They have so many contacts in the area that before you can say reupholster, they reply with a reassuring, "I've got a guy/gal for that!"
They are so great and easy to work with, I can't wait to start on my next project with them which is making my kids' rooms not look like we just moved in! And it's my house of 7 years!”
“We would highly recommend 1970 Dogwood Street if you are looking for great, easy to implement ideas for your home. They transformed our kitchen from bland to full of life with smart paint, rug and accent choices in a matter of a couple weeks. Anne and Jen are great to work with, and they make decorating fun. No more analysis paralysis with the overwhelming decorating choices for us - we have Anne & Jen!”
The services that Jen and Anne provide are invaluable. The key to their success is their ‘can do’ attitude. They approach each task with excitement and interest and anything they do will be a job well done. Their experience with design and furniture/color selection proved to be a life saver when they helped me decorate our new home. They are a delight to work with. I highly recommend 1970 Dogwood Street!
