This book was introduced to me by a friend in our book club, and we all enjoyed it so much, so I’m recommending it here in the hopes that you will as well! It’s a lovely book, set in a bookstore, on a vacation island in Massachusetts. That’s all I’ll say. Savor this one.
Before/After :: Simple Changes in the Entry
This lovely homeowner is lucky enough to walk through her front door every day to this sweet landing. It’s not a large space, but it’s truly hard-working! It boasts a large rug made by Flor House Pet, a sweet demi-lune console table topped with a gorgeous arched mirror, a new large light fixture outfitted with soft white light bulbs, art selected by the owner, plus a fresh coat of paint!
Here’s a “before” picture — can you spot all the differences?
Before/After :: A Lovely Home Office in the Age of Zoom
This home office has lots of beautiful natural light and a comfy chair, but lacked the stylish desk and polish that the room needed. We kept the functional cube storage bookcase, but added this gorgeous wallpaper to make her backdrop the envy of all Zoom participants! We also simplified the room’s window treatments and installed light-filtering shades that can be raised to provide privacy, while still allow lots of light to shine through.
The desk and file cabinet are from Arhaus.
Here are some “before” photos of the same space!
Before/After :: A Serene and Restful Living Room
This lovely open concept condo got a facelift, inspired by the homeowner’s chosen color palette, gobs of natural light, and a very pretty rug. We were happy to use that as the “jumping off point” in the room, and added a comfy charcoal grey sofa, a pair of swivel chairs in a smart/trim blue fabric, and the coffee tables that provide easy space for a cup of coffee and a stack of books.
What I’m Reading :: The Last Story of Mina Lee
This story is one of my favorites from a recent trip to the newly reopened library. What a treasure! It’s the story of a daughter of single immigrant mother, told after her mother’s unexpected death. This is the author’s first novel. Wowza! The story unfolds beautifully, and the dialogue and character development are top notch. I loved every page.
Before/After :: A Coastal Vibe in the Family Room
This was a fun project for a busy family. The homeowners envisioned pops of color, inspired by the stunning artwork. Happily, the room’s plentiful windows flood it with natural light, so our job was easy! We added an accent wall, a new rug, and reupholstered the ottoman, all in shades of blue inspired by the ocean.
See below for a few “before” pics for comparison.
Get Ready For Summer!
I’ve had a lot of fun slowly putting together my porch over the last couple of years. The arrival of Covid put it on top of the priority list! So this past winter/spring we added the couch, the pillows, the side tables, the fan and the rug. I sourced all the items from different places – all at good prices. We are very happy with the couch from PolyWood. It’s made from recycled + eco-friendly materials. It’s comfy and fits perfectly with the table. The rug is from Overstock, side tables are Safavieh from Target and the pillows from HomeGoods. The table and chairs are a set we bought years ago.
Lighting is key – these string lights, as well as the ones we have in the area below the porch, (where our grill is) are from Target as well. The center light with a fan – also key during the summer! – is from Lamps Plus.
This has become our favorite place for a relaxing afternoon nap and/or a fun cocktail hour!
Before/After :: Simple Changes Pack a Punch in our Kitchen
Upon moving into our “new to us” house last summer, we quickly began scheming on how to make a few changes, with a simple goal :: lighten and brighten our kitchen. It’s got a lot of wonderful features :: a great layout and lots of storage, plus a large window that overlooks the backyard. And now, it’s much improved.
It all started because we didn’t have a hood over our stovetop. We cook and bake every day. Once we started talking about putting in a new hood, we also decided to use the opportunity to re-work the upper cabinetry — and by that I mean, REMOVE IT ALL.
It’s great to have our plates, dishes, bowls, and mugs all within reach. I tested out the concept of removing the uppers by stacking plates on our island and putting coffee mugs in another bin — just as a way to see how we’d do. And we didn’t miss the cabinets at all! I actually think we gained “usable” storage because we eliminated an awkward corner cabinet, and now everything is an easy reach away. Scroll down for lots of “before” pics.
We replaced the hardware on the remaining cabinet doors and drawer fronts. We also got a new kitchen sink and faucet, but everything else stayed the same.
Our shelves were all custom built with solid hidden brackets. We primed them before they were installed and i still need to put a final coat on them, but no rush on that!
Here’s a few pictures of the kitchen before we got started. Note the lack of hood! Note the soffit, running under the ceiling, now removed!
We unearthed some fun 1970s wallpaper in the process.
Before/After :: A Glow-Up in the Living Room
Wow! This room is full of love and light, totally illuminated by the new paint color, lots of lamps, and a generous heaping of natural light. This space boasts beautiful details like the crown moulding and the lovely hardwood floors, but she’s made it a feature that beckons you in, right as you enter her home.
The pair of chairs perfectly balances the dark Chesterfield-style sofa and the homeowner made very personal decisions with the art and how it makes her feel — we support that 100%!
Here are some photos of what the room looked like, just after move-in. You’ll notice that one of the first recommendations we made :: get a larger rug! That really jumpstarted the process for her.
