If you’re up for a thoroughly modern tale – although it’s been compared to Dickinson for its complexity and humanity – complete with sex, drugs and rock-n-roll, then this is the book for you! The writing is very clean and witty and moves the book along quickly. This is not a book to read however, if you like a story that moves along linearly. The story centers around a group of friends who are teenagers living in New York in the late 60’s or early 70’s – I never did to the math to figure out the exact date. And each chapter takes a look at a different character as they grow and go through different stages in their life. It’s almost like a bunch of short stories except that they do tie in together, and because the writing is so exceptional it flows beautifully! Not everyone likes this, perhaps because it is unconventional in ways for a novel, but I loved it!
