We are pleased to highlight this family room, where a family heirloom rug became the “jumping-off point” for its design direction! The homeowners had recently acquired this rug from a family member and were looking to buy new furniture and paint the walls. In addition, we wanted to help highlight the beautiful natural light streaming through the front windows, while addressing shoe storage, as the room is directly adjacent to the entry foyer. We chose a soft grey/blue/turquoise for the walls, kept the existing tables and television cabinet, and added a neutral sofa with a pair of whimsical ottomans so everyone has a place to get comfy.
Here’s some “before” pictures.
The bookcases that were flanking the front window were removed, and a built-in window seat with lots of baskets underneath makes a tidy spot for storing shoes. We added a tailored reversible cushion and a structured cornice at the top in lieu of curtain panels.
A new ceiling-mount fixture and a pair of small floor/task lamps make it comfortable for both reading and watching television in the evenings.

LOVE that rug and all of the textiles that coordinate so nicely!
