Our clients are using their old dining room as a combination mudroom and homework area for their kids, and they are loving it! Lots of space to hang jackets and backpacks, stow shoes, and organize all the mail and school papers that come into the home. Recessed lighting was added here, so there is plenty of light despite only having one window.
Since the room is not large, we decided against individual workspaces for the children, and instead placed a simple work table as the centerpiece to the room. It can be moved or placed cross-wise if necessary, and because there are no drawers, it necessitates that supplies are placed elsewhere in easy-to-reach cubbies.
We used wall mounted racks from the Container Store alongside products from Ikea to create a lively and creative area that flows with the rest of the house– an important criteria because the room has 3 entrances to other rooms! Scroll down for the “before” photo in red.
